Racial profiling is defined as the practice of substituting skin color for substantial evidence as grounds for suspicion and action. An example of this would be a Wal-Mart doorperson checking the cart and receipt of an ethnic couple while a Caucasian couple walked on through.
Even in our comparably progressive culture, there are still problems with racial profiling and while some are mildly insulting like the aforementioned example, others are downright despicable.
There has been a lot of buzz about it on the major media networks and if your provider happens to be http://www.directspecialtv.com or you have access to any of the major news networks, then you have probably seen it. In New York City and most of the other heavily urbanized areas of the country, issues of racial profiling have been alarmingly high in recent years.
There was the incident just last year where Trayvon Martin was perceived as a threat and allegedly kicked off a life or death struggle (though Trayvon had no firearms) in which he was gunned down by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman. There have also been countless instances of NYPD crackdowns involving unwarranted and unjustified searches – mostly of ethnic citizens.
Despite what some might tell you, racial profiling is not “a necessary evil” and the only way it’s going to change is when people start reporting it.
